SNOWY CONDITIONS: TRAFFIC INFORMATION FOR WALES

2 Feb 2009

2 February 2009

Traffic Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government’s traffic and travel information service, is advising motorists across Wales to follow a few simple guidelines for stress-free journeys during the snowy weather.

Traffic Wales, which is based in Cardiff and Conwy, monitors and manages 300km of motorway and trunk roads in Wales via a network of 250 CCTV cameras, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

"Our dedicated team of operators is working around the clock to make sure that our roads are working as effectively and efficiently as possible in conjunction with the Trunk Road Agencies", said Traffic Wales manager, Viv Collins.

"Please help us to help you avoid bad weather and congestion with these simple tips."

  • Always leave plenty of time to complete your journey.
  • Before setting off, call Traffic Wales’ information line on 0845 602 602 0. Lines are open 24 hours a day and you can talk to one of our operators for up-to-the-minute traffic advice.
  • Listen to traffic reports on the radio to get an idea of road conditions and any incidents.
  • Visit www.traffic-wales.com to view images from our network of cameras and real-time traffic information. You can also sign in for free personalised SMS and email traffic alerts.
  • Pay attention to Traffic Wales’ variable message signs on the road network as they can alert you to accidents, closures and diversions.
  • Consider taking a winter pack on your journeys. We suggest a mobile phone to use in emergencies (making sure it’s safe and legal to do so), warm clothes, some food and drink and even a shovel if heavy snow has been forecast.
  • Remember that icy roads can increase stopping distances by 85%, so keep your distance from the vehicle ahead of you and avoid sudden movements.
