North Wales Trunk Road Agency

The North Wales Trunk Road Agency (NWTRA) operates on the basis of a partnership between the six North Wales Local Authorities, with Gwynedd Council acting as the Lead Authority.

NWTRA is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of over 300 miles of trunk road in North Wales on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government. This includes responsibility for approximately 1,150 trunk road structures including a number of substantial road tunnels on the A55 North Wales Coast Road.

The Agency Area covers virtually all of the administrative areas of Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Wrexham and the Isle of Anglesey (see plan below). However, NWTRA has a different role in the Anglesey area to that elsewhere, as explained below.

There are special arrangements with regard to the A55 from Llandygai (Bangor) to Holyhead across Anglesey (including Britannia Bridge), Menai Suspension Bridge and for the connecting links between the two bridges. UK Highways (A55) Ltd. are responsible for the management and maintenance of this section of the North Wales trunk road network, with NWTRA fulfilling a monitoring role on behalf of WAG.
