Ebbw River Bridge

1 Jul 2009

A package of works for the M4 River Ebbw Bridge is to commence on the Monday 22 June 2009 and programmed to last for 3 weeks. Works should be completed by 13 July 2009 but some aspects of the work are weather dependant.

The Ebbw River Bridge is to the east of Junction 28 and part of the M4 motorway which is the major route into South Wales for traffic providing support to local businesses and the Welsh economy. Included in the package of works is:-

·         Rewaterproofing of the eastbound deck. This includes removing the carriageway surfacing and exposing the bridge structure to allow any repairs and rewaterproofing works to be undertaken.  This work is required to protect the concrete structure from damage due to road salt.

·         Renewal of the expansion joints. As part of the waterproofing works the expansion joints at the hinges on the structure will also be removed and renewed.

·         Replacement of drainage systems. Due to the works and under the traffic management closures, replacement of the drainage system on the structure will be undertaken to help reduce future drainage problems in the area.

In advance of the scheme crossovers have been constructed to assist with the planned traffic management layouts for the construction works.

The main contractor for the works is Alun Griffiths Contractors Limited and Capita Symonds, as Consulting Engineer, will supervise the works.

This is a busy section of the network and unfortunately with this type of work there will inevitably be some disruption to road users whilst the works are in progress.  Traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce and control the flow of traffic, and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to residents, local businesses and road users.
