Work will start this week for approximately 9 weeks, on a £1.1m scheme to continue the improvements to the safety barriers and street lighting in the central reservation on the M4 motorway between Junction 26 Malpas to Junction 27 Highcross. The approximate length of new barrier will be 1.3km and there will be 44 new lighting columns installed to current design and lighting standards. This scheme is the progression of the recently constructed slip form barrier at Junction 26 and is the continuation of the programme of new central reserve slip form barrier works in the Newport area between Junctions 24 and 28 of the M4 motorway.
The works are required due to the current age and condition of the central reserve safety barriers and lighting columns. The new concrete barrier will provide the additional safety requirements of current day standards.
The South Wales Trunk Road Agency will be managing the works as Agents to the Welsh Assembly Government. The main contractor will be Alun Griffiths Contractors Limited and Capita Symonds, as Consulting Engineer, will supervise the works.
This is a busy section of the motorway and there is likely to be some disruption to road users whilst the works are in progress. Traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce, motorists and control the flow of traffic, and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to road users, businesses and residents.
