A temporary 50mph speed limit is in place on the M4 between junctions 24 (The Coldra) and 28 (Tredegar Park) while work to replace the central reservation barriers and introduce the variable speed limit system is ongoing. An average speed camera system will be introduced shortly to ensure the 50mph speed limit is enforced.
This will be the first time this system, which involves cameras recording the average speed of vehicles between a number of fixed points, will have been used on Welsh roads. The average speed cameras (SPECS) have been used to improve safety and traffic flows at more than 180 major roadwork schemes across the UK and are particularly effective in long stretches of road, reducing the likelihood of collisions and keeping the traffic moving at a steady rate.
The average speed cameras will be removed as soon as work on the central reservation barriers and the variable speed limit system is completed.
